St. Louisans of a certain age will probably remember Velvet Freeze, the local chain of ice cream stores. The addicted ice cream aficionados among them will surely recall the pleasures of their singular Gold Coast Chocolate. Far darker than any other locally available ice cream, its depth of flavor was as noticeable as its color. When Velvet Freeze finally passed from the scene, so did Gold Coast Chocolate.
But it’s time to rejoice. Beckie Jacobs of Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream has re-created Gold Coast. Seriously chocolate, it’s so dense it’s like eating a brownie. Absolutely lush. And with ‘Dipity’s ability to offer scoops in sizes from golf ball to softball, the guilt factor is relatively manageable. On the other hand, it’s pleasant to consider whether one should pair it with coconut or banana nut ice cream.
We’ve also seen it at Lamar’s Donuts on Brentwood. Talk about an occasion of sin….

Ice Cream on the Park (on the corner of Arsenal and Grand) is slowly phasing out their Emack & Bolio’s ice cream and replacing it with offerings from Serendipity. I could not be more pleased – their ice cream is awesome. LOVE the banana :o)
Whoa, hold on, isn’t the Velvet Freeze up the street from the first Sweetie Pie’s still there?
Not our neighborhood – can someone update us?
