One of the great things about theatre is how it manages to amalgamate so many disciplines into a single experience – or as Ed Kleban wrote to Marvin Hamlisch’s music, “One singular sensation”.
Blow, Winds is singular, but far more than a single sensation. This year’s Shakespeare in the Streets production is about St. Louis and its fragmentation, overlaid on the story of King Lear. It’s a remarkable event, not achieving perfection but achieving excellence in many ways – much, come to think of it, like what we hope for in terms of the region. Well written, well acted, but more, and the visuals are amazing.
I'll get a review up maybe later today, but more likely tomorrow. HOWEVER, there is only one other performance, and that's tonight in front of the main library downtown on Olive Street. On multiple levels this works – the music, the set, the acting, the script. Even the raging heat relaxed a little bit in the form of a breeze. One of my pals had been hesitant to go, but left saying, "I'm glad I went." One of the best nights downtown ever, and far more rare than a World Series championship. Get thee hither – bring a chair, reserve a seat, but do it.
